The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) offers a wide range of social enterprise and charitable services to support the UK’s construction industry. From funding to careers guidance and market forecasting to specialist training facilities and services, they are committed to improving standards and skills within the sector.
Working with a wide variety of organisations, including governments and training bodies, the CITB has a mandate to collect a levy from construction employers, in line with the Industrial Training Act. Monies collected allow CITB to provide its vital services, with all profits being reinvested in its activities.
The organisation is constantly striving to increase its knowledge and ability to improve all issues within the construction industry, seeking out new approaches and utilising technology in order to best serve its beneficiaries.
Approximately 50 construction workers are killed every year alongside many other serious injuries, and many of these occur on smaller sites. Figures also show that small and micro organisations employ nearly 50% of these workers – which brings an overwhelming responsibility to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and other legislation.
Through their research, CITB identified a strong need to help this section of the industry – which in turn gave rise to the development of Construction Companion. This unique mobile app has been created to provide a user-friendly system which will allow organisations to take control of their H&S duties, along with offering other high level features such as the ability to build H&S policies and share them with employees, leaving a record of their acceptance and understanding.
Among its many functions, the system also offers a central platform for project management and work delegation, with details of associated risks, assigned workforce members and incident/accident logs. Users and their clients will benefit from clear workflow management and improvements in H&S, while CITB can utilise the system to ensure that organisations have access to high quality content and training and also further their own understanding of SME activity and H&S management.
Ultimately, Construction Companion will enable companies to meet their obligations and also demonstrate their thoroughness to larger organisations, creating more opportunities for them to become part of their trusted and reliable supply chain.
What the client said...
Scott was always diligent, professional and very thoughtful about the aims of the project and how we might best exploit what we were doing. The project involved a multi-disciplinary team and numerous platforms, all of which presented no problem for Scott. An outstanding contributor.
